WHO WE ARE
WHY WHEAT?
Lori shares the story!
When I rebranded my consulting business I faced the typical agonizing decisions about color palette, “look”, fonts, etc. But one piece of the logo elements came easily. I had a vivid memory of a picture I took in my early twenties while working at my first real job in Western Kansas. I envisioned the photo in the old-fashioned album, where the clear pages cover the pictures and hold them in place with some sort of sticky substance.
The photo was a shot of a beautiful light golden wheat field, just days before harvest – tall stalks of thin plants with beautiful heads of grain, blowing in the wind. When I told my brand consultants about the picture, they were quite skeptical, but once the photo was located and scanned, we had a key portion of the logo – a stalk of wheat. It was personal and it felt right.
But there was more to what the photo represented. I grew up in Eastern Kansas, where corn, milo and beans were more prevalent. But as you drive out west on 1-70 or K-36 during the summer, you’ll be treated to oceans of wheat waving in the wind for as far as you can see. And it’s a special memory for me, especially when thinking about childhood road trips: to get anywhere from home, during the summer, there was the wheat. And my parents made it possible for our family of eight to explore some part of the United States nearly every summer with very long car rides…and always the wheat.
While attending the University of Kansas the wheat connection continued. KU is known for its stellar basketball program with a storied history. A sentimental and satisfying tradition at these games is called the “waving of the wheat.” Students and fans stand and sway their hands back and forth when we win a game and when singing our alma mater, which begins with” far above the golden valley,” which may or may not refer to field of wheat...but I like to think so.
Building a business from the ground up requires many difficult decisions using a balance of logic and intuition. I am much more comfortable with decisions made with a dose of intuition. So…why wheat? It’s inspiring, it’s enduring, and it’s personal. And I take my business and clients and relationships personally… so “wheat” is a symbol of my approach to business and life. It just feels right. And after more than 20 years in business, I think it’s gonna last.
